THANE:
The rising population of elderly citizens is a rich repository of experience which
offers a huge opportunity for reshaping the community and designing
neighborhood welfare initiatives, experts from Centre for Lifelong Learning at
Tata Institute of Social Science (TISS) said.
On
the occasion of World Elders day on Thursday, the researchers brought out the
message of the changing role of the growing senior citizen population in our
country and the need for active aging.
Professor
Nasreen Rustomfram, chairperson at the Centre for Lifelong Learning, said,
"There are around 600 million senior citizens in the world today and this
number is likely to double by 2025.
"The
section of the population above 80 years has seen the maximum rise due to
better medic
basic
facilities in terms of mobility and health support. The contributions of senior
citizens need to be duly acknowledged. An inclusion of these concepts in policy
will help build a smarter city," said S Siva Raju, professor and
chairperson of the centre for population, health and development at TISS.
One
of the elderly, Prabhakar Chhatre, decided to work for the society 26 years ago
instead of retiring to a quiet life in his native place.
